A Brief History of HeroQuest

The original edition of HeroQuest was released in the UK in 1989. It was substantially similar to the 1990 EU version, but with a number of small differences:

*Different first Quest (The Maze instead of The Trial).
*Two different Spell effects (Rock Skin, & Courage), which where more powerful but only lasted a single turn.
*An additional Shield and Helmet card in the Equipment deck, and no Cloak of Protection or Bracers.
*Heroes became Champions after three quests, and it included a cash reward.
*Quest Treasures could be used by any Hero.
*The Dwarf's disarm ability was automatic.


The revised 1990 edition was released in the EU and Commonwealth. It is the key editions most players know around the world.


The US version was released in the Americas in 1990. It made some changes compared with the 1990 EU version:

*Equipment cards replaced with an Armoury board, with a different selection. 
*A deck of Chaos Spell Cards where added.
*Several Monsters have multiple Body Points.
*A slightly different Treasure Deck.
*Some small differences in story and names.
*Extra Quest Treasures.
*Heroes started with specific weapons instead of having native attack dice.


The Japanese version was release in Japan in 1990.  It made some changes compared with the 1990 EU version:

*A different Quest Book.
*A different Equipment Deck.
*Different selection of Spells.
*Heroes may level up with money.
*Several Monsters have multiple Body Points.
*Different Quest Treasures.


The 1993 'Advanced Quest' edition was released in the EU and Commonwealth. It took the 1990 EU version, and added an extra Quest booklet and miniatures to go with it.


EXPANSIONS

The Expansions Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord where released alongside the EU (1980) and US (1990) versions. The US version had additional Quest Treasures and Spell scrolls, the ability to purchase Potions, plus small differences to accommodate the differing base games.

Against the Ogre Horde was release in the EU in 1990. It added multi-BP monsters to the EU version, new Monsters, plus Pit of Darkness and Swinging Blade traps. It also included a system of Chaos Spell Tokens.

Wizards of Morcar was release in the EU in 1991.It added men-at-Arms, three additional Hero Spell Groups, plus four different sets of evil spells.

The Adventure Design Kit was released in the EU in 1992. It added no new rules. An unfinished Quest/ 'The Plague of Zombies' was illustrated on the back cover, which various fan groups recreated over the years.

The Barbarian Quest Pack was released in the US in 1992, adding new Monsters, Chaos Spells, Men-at-arms, Treasure Cards, buyable Potions, and Quest Treasures.

The Elf Quest Pack was released in the US in 1992, adding new Monsters, Chaos Spells, Treasure Cards, Hero Spells, buyable Potions, and Quest Treasures.


MAGAZINES

Games Workshop's White Dwarf magazines featured 'The Halls of Durrag-Dol' (issue 134), and 'The Eyes of Chaos' (issue 145). There was also a non-rules preview in issue 115.

Adventures Unlimited issue 5 featured The Inns of Chaos.

The Marvel Winter Special comic was released for Christmas 1991, and featured a variety of content, included the 'Revenge of the Weatherman' scenario and the 'variant hazard' ruless.

The Brazilian magazine Dragao featured adventures (and some new Heroes) in issues 3, 4, 6, 8, and 13. 

The Brazilian magazine Só Aventuras featured adventures in issue 1. 


RE-RELEASE

In 2021, the core set was re-released. This was chiefly a slight update of the 1990US version with some aspects of the EU version mixed in. Several of the expansions where updated to match and some new ones and even bonus web-based content was released.
